The Winter Aconite (Eranthis hyemalis) is a plant of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). It is a stinzen plant that has flowers in early spring (January to March).
The plant has stems each bearing a yellow flower, surrounded by a circle of about six sessile leaves. The flower usually has six elongated petals.
The winterakoniet in the Benelux quite rare and occurs mainly at and near the old estates. The plant is native to southern France, Italy and the Balkans. In other countries the plant is overgrown.
