What does a Florist do?

A florist is a professional who specializes in the selection and arrangement of flowers for the purpose of decoration. Florists work all over the world, from huge warehouses which ship flowers internationally to small roadside stands in rural areas. Many people find themselves using the services of a florist at some point in their lives, since people appreciate gifts of thoughtfully arranged flowers, especially on important life occasions.

Florists have been around since at least 1623, when the word “florist” first entered English. Like the word for “flower,” it is derived from the Latin floris, which means “flower.” Florists traditionally work with cut flowers, although some may sell potted plants as well. The cultivation of flowers is left to gardeners and horticultural specialists who have individual contracts with florists to deliver flowers, usually daily, to ensure that they are fresh.

Florists do not generally require professional training, although most start out as apprentices working with a skilled florist who can teach the tricks of the trade. A good florist has an excellent eye for color and the aesthetics of flower arranging. He or she must also be talented at working on multiple projects at once; a florist might be making arrangements for a big wedding while handling day to day customers, for example. Some florists also run their own shops, in which case a head for business is vital.

The primary task of a florist is arrangement of flowers. Most florists sell a selection of pre-arranged flower bouquets at set prices for people who simply want to walk in and purchase arrangements. They also offer customized arrangement services; individual customers can come in and custom order a bouquet on the spot from available stock, or they can place an advance order, which is advised when someone needs a multitude of flowers for an event like a wedding, funeral, or graduation.

Arrangements may include fresh flowers, dried flowers, ribbons, foliage, other plant material, and other ornamental features. Florists also typically stock vases, baskets, and other tools for the display of flowers. They may also offer delivery of their products for people who want to send flowers to people recovering in hospital, bereaved families, and others.

Knowledgeable florists often known a great deal about the symbolism of the flowers that they work with. Different flowers have different meanings in specific cultures, as do certain colors. Florists are generally familiar with the cultural beliefs about flowers in the areas in which they work, and they may have information about other cultures, as well. This knowledge is extremely important when organizing flowers for events like weddings; as certain colors may be viewed as inauspicious, as will certain flowers.

Melbourne Florist owner Francine says she teams her wildflowers with a natural container of paperbark or richly coloured palm bark tied with raffia as well as natural look baskets and containers. It gets a great response in our shop presented that way and is always a popular choice with the customers.

Melbourne Florist was the original owner of 'In Vogue Flowers' Kew, Victoria . Francine become renowned for her huge and bountiful flower displays at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show which is held annually in April at the Royal Exhibition Building located in the Carlton Gardens in the Melbourne CBD. Francine says it is a great change for florists to demonstrate their skill and talents in order to promote the florist industry as well as your own reputation as a skilled florist.

Francine has been a florist for many years and has seen the florist industry grow into the high fashion industry that it is today. Long gone are the days when the florists was limited to such flowers as the humble gladioli and Sims carnation. Many brides choose the natural textures of Australian native wildflowers for their weddings and make a unique and refreshing change from the common rose bouquet although roses continue to be popular bridal flowers.

Many corporate clients choose to have wildflowers in their floral displays due to the fact that these flowers have a long vase life.

Flower Preservation Tips: Learn From Professional Florists How to Get the Most Life From Your Flowers

Flowers are one of the most versatile tools that someone can use for communication. You can express love using them, show appreciation to friends or co-workers, or display your superior sense of aesthetics by placing them in your house...

The uses are varied. However the problem with flowers is that they tend to wither and die after a short time.

The good news is that there are methods by which you can slow the dying process, getting more enjoyment from your flowers.

Although many people are not aware of this fact, plants don't die the moment they are uprooted. They are alive for quite a long time after and may be replanted, as long as the roots are kept intact. Moreover, if they are kept moist, preferably their roots waterlogged, they may survive for quite a long time.

Flowers have the same tendencies. If they are kept moist or wet, they can remain fresh for 4-5 days - sometimes for even as long as a week or two. The length of time they will remain fresh depends on the species of flower, as well as way the flowers are cut.

If the flower has a long stem, it will likely remain fresh for almost as long as it would have, if it had not been removed form the plant in the first place. In fact, roses can survive for almost a week if its stem is kept waterlogged for the duration.

The reason for this is that the stem of the flower contains the Xylem, which is the plant tissue responsible for carrying water through the plant. When the flower is connected to the plant, the Xylem is continuous and draws water from the root. If the flower is cut and the Xylem is kept dipped in water, it will continue to draw water to the flower naturally, keeping the flower fresh as if the flower remained attached to the plant itself.

This is why professional florists mount the flowers and leaves on a sponge when making a bouquet. Many people don't even realize that many bouquets have the sponge inside the packaging.

In this manner, you can just water the sponge on which the flowers rest, ensuring that the base of the stem can continue to collect water for transport to the flowers.

At home, you could fill a vase with a little bit of water and place the flowers into it. But, it would be much better to place a small sponge at the bottom of the vase, and embed the base of the stems into the sponge just the way florists would do. This method though efficient, cannot be expected to keep the flowers fresh forever. There are limits...

Buying or plucking the flowers just before your special occasion will keep them fresh for the occasion. But, if you need the flowers to last a bit longer, the sponge and flower vase method will serve you best.

Without constant contact with water, the flowers will generally dry up and wither away in just one or two days.

You should always strive to pluck or purchase your flowers just before the main event or your special occasion, if at all possible. Fresh flowers are just always best.

But not everyone has the luxury of being able to buy flowers freshly cut. Sometimes the sheer scale of an event or a wedding will require flowers to be cut and delivered hours or days before the festivities begin.

If you have to bring the flowers in early, always use refrigeration to store them. It may be a bit more expensive to refrigerate the flowers, but it will extend the life and beauty of the flowers.

By utilizing these flower preservation tips, you will be able to get more life and more enjoyment from every set of flowers you grow or buy in the future.

Online Wholesale Florists

Online wholesale florists offer an efficient and cost effective place to find some of the world's best bulk floral purchases for small or large retail florist shops, grocery stores, gift shops, and community groups. Even individuals can purchase from wholesale florists for weddings in small or large bulk as well as for fund raising organizations. It is extraordinarily easy to browse, compare, purchase and receive bulk items through timely shipping by ordering online. Whether it is fresh cut flowers or potted plants, a huge selection of floral species can be found through many companies that specialize in shipping domestic and international flowers at cut rate prices to retail companies and organizations that can then turn a good profit.

Many companies that provide wholesale floristry products operate from different vantage points regarding sales targets and services. Some wholesale florists have developed a system that has business partnerships with international sources in places like South America. Some South American gardens grow large amounts of greenery and floristry that is sold to wholesalers who in turn market the products to US retailers. Other growers in America sell their products to wholesalers in bulk for the same benefits. This provides a good financial arrangement for producers, wholesalers and retailers because of the many advantages to these partnerships.

Some of the advantages to this arrangement include marketing, credit lines, transportation, customer contacts, bulk sales, and inventory convenience. Growers who are in the business of harvesting flowers and plants in large amounts are not so much in the marketing business and need a distribution channel for their products. Wholesale florists provide a perfect venue with marketing strategies designed to move products to the retail market through seamless transportation plans and optimum marketing strategies. This takes the pressure off overseas growers as well as growers based across the United States who would otherwise have to attempt to market their items to the thousands of retailers across the country.

Good marketing by online wholesale florists connects the producer with the retailer for a perfect financial marriage. Lines of credit are also provided for retailers that many producers cannot offer from overseas venues. Another plus is the fact that wholesale florists can break up bulk products and parcel them out into smaller amounts that are ordered by certain retail buyers. Large gardens in America and overseas are not equipped to handle this assignment and deal only in large shipping orders that generally go to wholesalers. Customer contact is also an important function that wholesalers are able to maintain as the middle man between growers and sellers.

The product convenience that is provided by the florist middle men offer a huge plus to overseas as well as distant US productions by transporting floristry closer to retail stores. This makes it easy for buyers to visit warehouses and marketing facilities in order to make first hand inspections of products before purchase. Another type of online wholesale florists are those that have devised business connections with a network of florist shops and other flower speciality shops around the country in order to be able to provide florist deliveries and quality arrangements to customers at cut rate prices. Many companies offer cheap pricing and free delivery on quality flowers through cost effective methods of marketing and delivery through their network of suppliers and shops.

Companies such as these can boast large inventories of products based on a compilation of network stores worldwide and provide consumers with unparalleled, guaranteed service. The floristry business can be pleasant as well as financially lucrative for many wholesale florists who deal with the beauty of nature that cheers many people on many occasions. The Scripture verse that states "...unto thee do we give thanks: for that thy name is near thy wonderous works declare." (Psalm 75:1) is especially obvious when dealing with garden beauty indoor or outside. Many online wholesale florists offer galleries to display their flowers and plants from many different markets both home and abroad. The beauty of international flowers can be spectacular from orchids to roses that are harvested from tropical gardens overseas.

There are many more services that online wholesale florists offer retail buyers including information on the hottest selling floral items, how to present certain floristry products and where the trends in the floral business is moving. It is also advantageous for many retail buyers to belong to wholesale associations as well as to attend conventions that feature other information relevant to the florist industry. Conventions offer the opportunity to visit with suppliers, to interact with other business owners about the best business practices, and to pick up other important tips. There are many Internet sources that offer further information regarding the whole sale flower business that may be of help to anyone who is interested in retail, wholesale or production opportunities.

The Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival

The Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, on the first full moon night of the 8th month on the lunar calendar, is celebrated by Chinese people all around the world. Chinese moon cake festival takes place at the time of the autumn equinox, when the moon is supposedly at its fullest and roundest, and many of the traditional festivities center around admiration of the moon and eating foods that resemble the moon.

Traditional Chinese Mooncakes

Chinese mooncakes are small pastries about the size of a human palm that consist of a cookie-like crust and various fillings, ranging from lotus seed paste to red and green bean paste. Traditional mooncakes usually have a bright orange salted duck egg enclosed in the filling, which symbolizes the moon. Mooncakes are very rich and heavy, so each mooncake is usually cut into 4 wedges and shared. The traditional way to enjoy mooncakes is to sit with family and friends, and to eat the mooncake while admiring the moon.

Modern mooncakes have also made an appearance – many of these use fruit fillings instead of the traditional fillings, and others replace the traditional crust with glutinous rice crusts (known as mochi). There are also frozen mooncakes that are made with ice cream, as well as jelly mooncakes.

The Intention - According to Many of the Jurists

Allah instructs in the Qur'an: "And they are ordained nothing else than to serve Allah, keeping religion pure for Him." The Prophet, upon whom be peace, said: "Actions are judged according to the intention behind them, and for everyone is what he intended."

The intention must be made before fajr and during every night of Ramadan. This point is based on the hadith of Hafsah, which reported that the Prophet said: "Whoever does not determine to fast before fajr will have no fast" (that is, it won't be accepted). This is related by Ahmad, an-Nasa'i, at-Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, and Ibn Majah. Ibn Khuzaimah and Ibn Hibban have classified it as sahih.

The intention is valid during any part of the night. It need not be spoken, as it is in reality an act of the heart, which does not involve the tongue. It will be fulfilled by one's intention to fast out of obedience to Allah and for seeking His pleasure.

If one eats one's pre-dawn meal (Suhoor) with the intention of fasting and to get closer to Allah by such abstinence, then one has performed the intention. If one determines that one will fast on the next day solely for the sake of Allah, then one has performed the intention even if a pre-dawn meal was not consumed.

According to many of the jurists, the intention for a voluntary fast may be made at any time before any food is consumed. This opinion is based on 'Aishah’ s hadith: "The Prophet came to us one day and said: 'Do you have any [food]?' We said, 'No.' He said: 'Therefore, I am fasting." This is related by Muslim and Abu Dawud.

The Hanafiyyah and Shaf'iyyah stipulate that the intention must be made before noon (for voluntary fasts). The apparent opinion of Ibn Mas'ud and Ahmad is that the intention may be made before or after noon.

Concerning the New Moon of Shawwal

This event is confirmed by sighting the new moon, even if it is seen by only one just person, or by the passage of thirty days in the immediately preceding month of Sha'ban.

Ibn 'Umar said: "The people were looking for the new moon and when I reported to the Messenger of Allah that I had seen it, he fasted and ordered the people to fast." This is related by Abu Dawud, al-Hakim, and Ibn Hibban, who declared it to be sahih.

Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet instructed: "Fast after you have seen it [the new crescent] and end the fast [at the end of the month] when you see it. If it is hidden from you, then wait until the thirty days of Sha'ban have passed." This is related by al-Bukhari and Muslim.

Commenting on these reports, at-Tirmidhi states: "Most knowledgeable people act in accordance with these reports. They say that it is correct to accept the evidence of one person to determine the beginning of the fast. This is the opinion of Ibn alMubarak, ash-Shafi’i, and Ahmad. An-Nawawi says that it is the soundest opinion.

Concerning the new moon of Shawwal [which signifies the end of the fast], it is confirmed by completing thirty days of Ramadan, and most jurists state that the new moon must have been reported by at least two just witnesses. However, Abu Thaur does not distinguish between the new moon of Shawwal and the new moon of Ramadan. In both cases, he accepts the evidence of only one just witness."

Ibn-Rushd comments that: "The opinion of Abu Bakr ibn alMundhir, which is also that of Abu Thaur and, I suspect, that of the Dhahiri school of thought, is supported by the following argument given by Abu Bakr al-Mundhiri: there is complete agreement that breaking the fast is obligatory, that abstaining from eating is based on one person's report, and that the situation must be like that for the beginning of the month and for the ending of the month, as both of them are simply the signs that differentiate the time of fasting from the time of not fasting."

Ash-Shaukani observes: "If there is nothing authentic recorded that states that one may only accept two witnesses for the end of the month, then it is apparent, by analogy, that one witness is sufficient, as it is sufficient for the beginning of the month.

Furthermore, worship based on the acceptance of one report points to the fact that such singular reports are accepted in every matter unless there is some evidence that specifies the peculiarity of specific cases, such as the number of witnesses concerning matters of wealth, and so on. Apparently this is the opinion of Abu Thaur."

The Plant - Growth

There is a lore which says that the name Frangipani derives from a perfume created by an Italian family of the same name. Frangipani, also known as the Plumeria, is native to warm tropical areas of the Pacific Islands, Caribbean, South America and Mexico.

They can grow to be large shrubs or even small trees in mild areas of the U.S. In tropical regions, Plumeria may reach a height of 30' to 40' and half as wide. Their widely spaced thick succulent branches are round or pointed, and have long leather, fleshy leaves in clusters near the branch tips.

Leaves tend to fall in early winter since they are deciduous and sensitive to cold. Plumeraia rubra acutifolia has very fragrant white flowers with yellow centers. The petals are small and strongly overlapping, giving the impression of a flower in the process of unfolding.

About the Bloom Fragrance

Wax flower is a slow-growing, woody, evergreen vine which has thick, fleshy, two to four-inch-long, green or variegated leaves, and produces in spring and summer large, round, hanging clusters of creamy white to light pink, 0.5-inch, fragrant flowers, each with a perfect five-pointed pink star in the center.

Bloom fragrance is subtle and you must come close to the plant to enjoy it but it is well worth the effort. These long-lasting, showyblooms emerge on old flower spurs, which should never be pruned off.

The delicate flowers appear to be made of porcelain and are truly unique. The flowers produce abundant nectar which drips down in warm weather. Because Wax Plant is especially sensitive to nematodes, plants are often grown in containers where the soil can be carefully controlled.

Mexican Wedding Traditions

Every country or ethnicity has its own traditions. Traditions are especially important when it comes to life events such as weddings.

In Mexico, wedding traditions can include many things. In some cities of northern Mexico, there is the tradition of giving a ring called "of promise" that occurs before the ring of commitment. The ring is generally for long engagements, which are common in this area.

As for the music, mariachis may replace organ music but the brides' march is usually played on the organ.

Mexican weddings tend to be large with many attendants. The attendants are called madrinas and padrinos and they have special roles in the wedding.

The flower girl and ring bearer are dressed as miniature versions of the bride and groom. The madrina de ramo carries flowers for the Virgin Mary. The madrina de laso carries a jeweled or beaded rope that is placed around the couple as they say their vows, to symbolize their union.

The bridegroom often offers the bride thirteen coins. The madrina de arras holds the thirteen coins that the bridegroom presents to the bride.......
