About the Wood & Bark

Trema orientalis is a species of arboreal plants. It belongs to the family Ulmaceae according to the classification standard or the Cannabaceae according to the classification phylogénéntique.

It is found in South Africa up to tropical Africa and in warm regions of Asia. It has been naturalized in Hawaii.

It is a fast growing species growing in previously disturbed areas and forest edges. It is a pioneer species which can grow on poor soils and can be used to regenerate forest areas by providing shade and protection for hardwood seedlings. T. orientalis is nitrogen fixing and can improve soil fertility for other plant species .

The wood is relatively soft and burns quickly and easily when dry. The wood is suitable for the production of paper pulp giving the paper with a good tensile strength and bending .

The bark can be used for the manufacture of twine or string, and for waterproofing fishing lines . In India and Tanzania, the wood is used for making charcoal.

These trees have many traditional medicinal uses in a wide range of crops . The leaves and bark are used to treat coughs, sore throat, asthma, bronchitis, gonorrhea, yellow fever, toothache, and as an antidote to poison General . An infusion of bark control dysentery and a decoction of leaves is used to deworm dogs, ".

In recent pharmacological studies, we showed that aqueous extract of bark reduces blood sugar levels in the rat experimental model for diabetes mellitus and could be useful in treating this disease .

The leaf extracts of related species (Trema guineense and Trema micrantha) showed anti-inflammatory ownership, anti-arthritic and analgesic in rodents , suggesting that T. orientalis could have similar effects.

The species has a high ecological impact, with at least 14 species of butterflies using it as a food source for caterpillars. Several species of birds eat fruit or insects that live in these abundant trees.

Often found pigeons and doves eating fruit or make their nests. The leaves, pods and seeds are used as feed for cattle, buffaloes and goats in the Philippines. The leaves are also eaten by wild animals and can be used as spinach.
